Abmeldung: how to deregister from Germany when you leave -- and why it matters for your pension.
Deregistration (Abmeldung) is a legal requirement when you leave Germany. Skip it and you risk fines up to EUR 1,000, unwanted tax obligations and delays to your pension refund. This guide covers timing, documents, the process and how deregistration connects to your pension claim.

Guide path
The deregistration process in the right order
Handle deregistration before or alongside your move. Then continue into the pension refund path once the 24-month waiting period begins.
Who needs to deregister and when
Anyone who registered a residence in Germany must deregister when leaving the country. This applies whether you lived in an apartment, shared flat or house. You can deregister up to 7 days before your move and must deregister within 14 days after leaving. Failing to deregister can result in fines up to EUR 1,000 and problems terminating contracts or claiming your pension refund later.
How to deregister: in person, by mail or online
Visit your local Einwohnermeldeamt (registration office) with your passport and a completed deregistration form (Abmeldeformular). You can also mail the form via registered post. For a fully online option, Fundsback's partner service Deregistration.de handles the entire process remotely -- no office visit required. You'll receive your Abmeldebescheinigung (deregistration certificate) once complete.
Documents to prepare and keep
You need your passport or national ID and the completed deregistration form. Keep your Abmeldebescheinigung (deregistration certificate) -- it proves you left Germany and can speed up your pension refund application. Also keep your social insurance card, last pay slips and any pension correspondence from Deutsche Rentenversicherung.
Contracts, insurance and other obligations
Before leaving, terminate your health insurance, internet, electricity, gas and mobile phone contracts. Cancel broadcasting fees (GEZ/Rundfunkbeitrag) and deregister your vehicle if applicable. Inform your bank about your move. Deregistration activates special cancellation rights (Sonderkuendigungsrecht) for many contracts -- use them.
How deregistration connects to your pension refund
Your deregistration certificate is one of the supporting documents for a pension refund application. It confirms your departure date and starts the clock on the 24-month waiting period. Once that period is complete and you meet the other eligibility requirements, you can move into the pension refund process with Fundsback.
